Carolling in the Queen Street Mall - Morningsong Community Choir

Morningsong and Moresong have been invited to be part of the
Queen St Mall caroling festivities over Christmas starting
November 27 to December 24.

There is a city budget for this, and because of the structure of
Morningsong (i.e. your benign dictator doesn't have a board
or committee to answer to) you will be paid individually rather
than the $$ going to the group. More on money towards the end.

We have been asked to perform as a large group and also form
subgroups of wandering carolers to perform three 20 minute
brackets of songs.

Vision in Voice Choir: for sight impaired singers

From Jane:

VISION IN VOICE CHOIR

For sight impaired singers.

At last, we are about to launch the new choir, Vision In Voice.
This has been inspired by our dynamic young tenor, Joshua Roberts,
who joined us [Morningsong Choir] several months ago and who feels
transformed by singing with us every week.

The Redland City Council Eat Well Be Active programme has given
us a grant to start the new choir beginning Thursday morning,
September 24 at the Capalaba Place Community Hall,
14 Noeleen Street, Capalaba  {See Google Map below).

The time will be 9.30 am to 11.15 am and singers are encouraged
to arrive a few minutes early to get to know each other.

It is free to attend.

The choir will follow the same principles as Morningsong Choir
and Moresong Choir except when it comes to performances.

Vision In Voice aims to give a performance in December to celebrate
2009 International Day of Disabilities.

The Redland Council has started a publicity campaign to try and reach
as many sight impaired singers as possible, but it may take a while for
word to get out. If you know anyone who may like to join, please have
them or their carer contact me or Joshua.

They can also book directly with the Redland Council booking desk at
3829-8489 or 3829-8887 or 3829-8911.

Morningsong - School holiday singing: September to October 2009

 From  Jane:

SINGING THROUGH THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

School holidays here in Queensland are from the 19 September to 5 October.

Yes, Morningsong will sing through the school holidays.

The Wednesday night group, Moresong will also sing during the holidays.

We will not make a point of learning any new music, unless it's an easy
peasy thing with limited thinking required.

If you have children, grandchildren, or visiting friends and relatives,
they are welcome to come along.

Music: Let me know of any special requests but I thought that we
would revisit some of the oldies that we haven't done for a while.

Payment: For simplicity's sake payment will be by session at the
discount rate of $8.50 for everyone and free for children and visitors.

For those doing work exchange at $0 - $5 we will just keep it as it is.

Normal fees will resume for Term 4 beginning Friday 9 October.

Moresong - Morningsong now in the evenings as well!

From Jane:

At last we've found a venue for our evening choir which will be called, for now...
MORESONG

Eveningsong sounds religious, Nightsong sounds full of cigarette smoke and
jazz bassists, so, hey, what about just more song!

Where:
Balmoral Uniting Community Centre
19 Rogoona St
Morningside

This is just off Wynnum Road running to Thynne Road, Morningside
It's 0.3 kms from the Morningside train station. {see Google map
below for directions).

It's smaller than the Senior Cit's hall and will be a heck of a squish
if you all decide to turn up on the same night, but it has a piano,
air conditioning and reasonably good acoustics.

Parking is at the back of the building plus on the street if that fills up.
You can enter the hall via the back or front entrance.

When: Starting SEPTEMBER 2, Wednesday evenings 7 - 8.45 pm.
We may meet through the school holidays - depends on what you
would like to do.

At the moment no conviviality/tea/wine break is being planned,
but if singers would like the same format as Morningsong with
a break in the middle and finish at 9 pm we can discuss this.

How much: Same as Morningsong, but one fee covers singing
in both choirs...(this may change next year but you are welcome
to take advantage of singing twice a week for one fee while
the second choir gets up and running).

Free first session

Sliding scale of $0- $12:
$0 - $5 for regulars who do work exchange,
$85 for 10-week term,
$10 casual: students/conc/hardship
$12 casual

The plan is to follow the same principles as Morningsong - i.e.
singing songs in harmony, no auditions, no demanding performance
schedules, no need to read music, etc.

The repertoire will depend on the kind of voices we have
- a few of the songs will be the same.

Singing Meditations

This message is from Rob Stevenson via
Fay Beatty (thanks Fay).

Fay's comment:

"I wonder if you can forward this to people in
the choir. As previously mentioned this music
meditation is in singalong format, like the choir
- learning by ear.

The one in Morningside has a nice group and
we have a cup of tea afterwards. It takes place
every second sunday of the month all welcome."

From Rob

"I hope life is flowing beautifully for everyone.

This weekend we have two Music Meditations
(satsangs) to look forward to.

The first one is on this Saturday evening (July 11th)
7pm @ The Yoga Den, 43 Vulture Street, West End
($10/donation).

It promises to be another uplifting night of music,
sufi dancing, and silent meditation. Don't forget to
bring pillows/blankets for extra warmth.

The second one is on Sunday afternoon (July 12th)
2pm @ The Morningside Healing Sanctuary,
147 Richmond Road, Morningside ($10/donation)

A beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and
please feel welcome to stay on for a cuppa afterwards.

I look forward to catching up with everyone again
for another glorious weekend of chanting and
meditation.

Blessings of light and peace to all,
Rob - om shanti

Family Sing for Fun - 10 July 2009

Message from Jane:

Family Sing For Fun!

Morningsong Choir invites families, children and members
of the community to sing songs and rounds.

FREE
Friday July 10
10 am - 11.30 am
Bulimba Community and Senior Citizens' Hall
Corner Barramul St and Stuart St, off Oxford St, Bulimba
Children under 14 need to be accompanied by a grownup

We are doing this by request from some of the singers in
our group who have toddlers and school age children.
The songs we will be doing are simple enough for them
to join in - it won't be specifically kiddie-music. Little
children are usually thrilled to pieces to be singing in a
choir singing real music with adults, but I will adjust the
types of songs we sing as we go, depending on who comes.

For more info please ring Jane 3160 5757 or 0422 005 901

Visiting choir members - 17 July

From Jane:

On Friday 17 July, we will probably be hosting some
singers from a visiting choir from Newcastle.

They are here to visit and sing with Marina's choir
in East Brisbane, but they don't have much to do
during the day so Marina is going to suggest that
they toodle along the river on the River Cat and
jump off at Oxford Street to join us for a sing if
they wish.

New choir venue: from Friday 17 July

From Jane:

We meet at the Bulimba Uniting Church upstairs
hall until June 29.

From Friday July 17,
the first day of the school term 3, we will be
at the BULIMBA SENIOR CITIZENS HALL,
corner Stuart St and Barramul St, Bulimba.

I know that most of us have developed a great
affection for the little church hall and the
acoustics will be hard to beat, but this is
a more practical place overall. Same time,
same format with morning tea in the middle,
same restaurant down the street unless we
have another people's revolution.

Directions:

From East Brisbane, turn left from Wynnum Road
into Hawthorne Road. At the round-about, turn left
into Oxford St, travel for .5 km, turn left at
Stuart St, and the hall is at the end of the park.

From Redlands: turn right from Wynnum Road into
Riding Road. At the round-about, turn left into
Oxford St, travel for .5 km, turn left at Stuart St,
and the hall is at the end of the park.

From the Bulimba Ferry terminal: walk along
Oxford St until you come to the large park on
the right hand side. Walk diagonally across the
park until you come to the hall. Or walk along
Oxford St until you come to Stuart St, turn right
and continue for .2 km to the hall.

There is ample parking at the venue and in the street.

Finishing time change for Friday 12 June 2009

From Jane:

Rev. Bruce has requested that we finish this Friday
at 11 am instead of 11.30. He has a memorial service
to give and needs the space.

So....here is what we will do. We will sing straight through
without our normal cocktail hour, I mean, cuppa tea break,
and then finish at 11 am and go off for an early lunch.

I will reduce the fee for everyone and post it at the door.
For those who have paid in advance you will get credit
or a refund, whatever you prefer.

Sorry everyone.

Many thanks for all of your wonderful support today
for the Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea.

We raised a total of $274.60, which is pretty amazing
for our little group. $200 was donated online, and $74.60

Important change of location - May 1, 2009

From Jane:

**Important change of location May 1, 2009 **

Due to an art show being held at the church hall
we need to move our session just on that day.

We have a very welcoming home at an aged care facility:
CLEM JONES HOME
50 Brisbane St, Bulimba.

There is a large car park and street parking also available.

Directions from ferry: turn left on Coutts and walk one block.

The Home is on the corner.

Go inside main doors. The main hall where we will sing is
just straight ahead. We will have a normal session but the
residents are very welcome to participate. The management
and staff are delighted to have us there.

PAYMENT:
The collection of money there may confuse the residents.
Deb or Madeleine will check you off on a roll but please
postpone payment until the following week.

TEA/COFFEE BREAK:
We will break at the same time and I believe that there
may be a basic coffee shop there. However, we do not
have the facilities to make our own tea.

Thank you so much everyone - I hope this is not
inconvenient.

Morningsong Singers - family session, Friday 17 April

SING SHOUT STOMP ABOUT! Family Sing

At the request of Morningsong singers,
we are going to have a special session
this Friday, April 17 for just 1 hour,
9.30 - 10.30 am for a family sing.

If you have children, grandchildren or
neighbours' children and would like to
participate, feel free to bring them along.

If you just want to have a sing, come along
anyway. We'll be doing the simpler things
that we do in Morningsong like rounds and
canons (e.g. Bunawa) rather than kiddlywink
kind of commercial TV stuff.

If there are quite a few adult singers then
it's easy for the children to learn parts
in harmony so you are all very welcome.

It's free to all Morningsong singers and kin,
but in various posters about town it states
"gold coin donation".

Please let Jane know if you are coming by
emailing:

Taste of Harmony: Pao de Queijo Recipe

Note from Jane re requested recipe:

Hello everyone,

Many thanks for participating in Taste of Harmony week
by bringing such delicious treats. Here is the recipe for
the Brazilian Little Cheese Breads.

Pao de Queijo

Here is the originalrecipe, from Brazil:
http://tinyurl.com/bsrv6l

And here is what I do since we can't get the kind of
sour-ish Brazilian cheese here in Aussieland as far as I know:

This is a food processor recipe.

Heat oven to 200*C
Lightly spray or brush a mini muffin pan with oil.

1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup vegie oil
1 egg
1 cup Tapioca flour (Asian food store)
70 g strong cheddar cheese, more or less to taste, suitably
shredded for your food processor
1/2 teaspoon salt

Process all together until smooth.

Pour batter into mini muffin tins about 3/4 way full.

Sprinkle with fleur de sel (flaky salt) and a little chopped rosemary.

Bake for about 20 minutes at 200*C. Upturn immediately onto a rack.

New member of Morningsong Choir

From Jane (Singing Leader):

"We have a new member, Joshua, who is blind and currently
attending with a care worker. He is being encouraged to
become more independent, and is searching for a way to get
from the Morningside train station on Friday mornings
to choir and back again after coffee/lunch at the end.

I would like someone who can organise a roster system
of transport and it would be good if about 5-6 people can
take turns to help with transport. We will discuss this
after the break next session but this is just a heads
up to think about."

Ron's comment:

Joshua's love of music and sheer enjoyment of the choir
is infectious. We are very lucky to have him as he is
a great contributor who is very amiable and loves to
sing. A very warm welcome, Joshua - we will all be the
richer for your participation.

Morningsong - upcoming events - Relaxation Centre and Taste of Harmony

Hello singers -

Firstly, a warm welcome to the new singers who
have come in the last couple of weeks. It's very
daunting to come into a group all of whom look
as if they know each other so thank you for your
bravery.

Here is some info which I clean forgot to tell you
about last session.

This Friday Feb. 20 is photo day for the website and
Eliza Leahy will take a shot of us on the steps at
11.30 to 11.35 am. There are about 45 singers
who turn up regularly (though not on the same day)
and we need 10+ to make us look half way respectable.
If you are camera shy I fully understand. By the
time your picture is on a website it's pretty tiny - it's
just the overall affect that Eliza is looking for.

Websites: This first site is about the Taste of Harmony
event coming up. We are signed up to participate.
http://www.tasteofharmony.org.au.

Second site is a recommendation from a choir member.
Ron says that Chris's workshops are really worth
attending.
http://www.chrisjames.net/

Third is about the singing workshop coming up on
Sunday 15 March at the Relaxation Centre.
You can go for $10 (instead of $35)as a group booking
(not available for that price at the door) if you pay by
Friday Feb 27 at the latest. 100% refunds by
March 6 if we don't get 6+.
http://www.relaxationcentreqld.com.au/

Fourth is a link to Mal Lloyd's midi file for the song
Amen Siakudumisa. (with thanks) if you'd like help
with your part.

Thanks everyone and I look forward to seeing you on
Friday.

Somagwaza and Mingulay Boat song on YouTube

Hi Singers

A couple of YouTube video additions:

This is Somagwaza again only with a step by step
process with Pete Seeger years ago. There is a
pause in the middle of the video where you think
nothing happens but just keep it running:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icelp2eYkO4

This is the Mingulay Boat song which we may do
in a couple of weeks:

Cheers,
Jane

YouTube videos for Morningsong - 11 February 2009

Hi Singers

Here are some videos (YouTube) of things I have in
mind to do - if some are just women's choirs it's just
because that's the best rendition I could find on the
internet. It's the overall sound which counts.

This is the Yale slavic choir singing the one we will learn -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0OIGWRKsc0&feature=channel_page

This one is Kwaheri which we will be doing in
the future:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJKszZ9OHBI&feature=channel_page

This one is Rise up O flame which we visit again:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RmLKC3TH-0&feature=channel

Somagwaza which we will do without animal sounds
thank you!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUL7HYH0xEU

I'll email you again when I have some more on the list.

Great to have you when you can come. There is also
a second choir in the works for the evening coming up
which will be doing the same stuff as Morningsong ,
so that may give you another opportunity to sing.

All best,
Jane

Parking for Morningsong - 21 January 2009

Hi Singers -

Apologies for the parking probs, especially with the dramatic
increase in numbers of singers. The best places are on
Lytton Road just up the hill from the hall, in the street
outside the library (steep hill), in some of the side streets
or behind the Coffee Club in the large 2 hour lot if you
arrive late.

On January 30, I invite all of you to bring a sandwich
and stay on for lunch in the hall (very low key - we don't
have access to kitchen) and get to meet the other
singers if you like.

Coffee : for those meeting up for coffee after the
sessions, the restaurant called Get Hooked has offered
cofffee for $3 if you mention that you come from the choir.

Their fish lunch specials are great, by the way.

Looking forward to seeing you - the sound of all of your
voices is just beautiful.

Jane

Morningsong Singing Leader - Jane Becktel

Jane has a degree in music from the Elder Conservatorium
(University of Adelaide). She has been involved in teaching
music for many years. In 2007/2008 she worked for
The Song Room, a philanthropic organisation dedicated
to bringing music to less advantaged children and
communities.

Jane recently resumed working with the Song Room. Her
focus at the moment is working with the Mater Children's
Hospital Special School - singing with children who range in
age from 4 to Year 12. Jane considers it the most challenging
job she has had but finds it tremendously rewarding hearing
very ill children sing in beautiful harmony.

In her early work Jane worked as a music teacher in
Adelaide for 4 years before moving to California with her
American husband. They had two children whom they
homeschooled. The family choir Jane facilitated in California
was a volunteer job for all homeschooling families and it was
both a music and social event every week for over a decade.

This blog records Jane's communications with Morningsong
community choir members.
